Entitlement. It exists even in the floral industry.
I will preach it until the day I day… Support Your Local Farmers!!!
Seeing stories about any kind of deceitful business practices, especially financial ones, make my stomach turn. I just don’t understand how people lack the ability to respect others. Entitlement is real and it is the BANE of the existence of the human population.
Whether or not you are religious, the basis of all moral codes is based on the 7 Deadly Sins. Whether you want to admit it or not, democracy was founded on religion. Granted when religion came into existence, it was more of a culture and government structure rather than a community that preaches and follows the word of God.
An article from a New Zealand news site, 1 News, is the epitome of failing at human decency in the floral industry. A customer ordered an $84 rose bouquet through a company called Bloomex. Rather than being an honest business, they ended up ordering a single rose on behalf of the customer at a cost of $45. Bloomex pocketed the remaining $39.
The sad thing is, that’s not a rare occurrence. Having retail floral experience, I can tell you with certainty that similar businesses exist in the United States. I’m not ashamed to say that after a while, it just became routine to hang up on one of those companies, Just Flowers (no link, they don’t deserve that). They’d call and ask for same-day delivery for a low-ball price with crazy expensive flowers that aren’t in-house on a daily basis.
The greed and entitlement that fuels the envy of dishonest businesses are mind-boggling to me. So the obvious question is how do we fix this? How do we support small businesses that are honest? It’s simple, really. Call your local flower shop to send flowers national or abroad. Your florist will have access to a Florist to Florist network, guaranteeing that communication occurs between the two businesses without a third person.
Want to make a purchase on an even more micro level? Find a local flower farm for in-season flowers and how to purchase their products.
Cut out the middle man, and you have all the control you need to feel confident in your transactions. It kind of sounds like capitalism works and our government should take notes and get out of the way…?
